Stock options & AMT

Your equity has a vesting schedule. So does the tax.

Stock option planning and Alternative Minimum Tax planning are core services here, a short drive from the companies that grant them. Every step below links to the firm’s own plain-English article.

  1. 01 · Grant

    ISO or NSO?

The type of option you were granted decides how, and when, it is taxed. Start by knowing which one you hold.

Tax implications of stock options (article on bhuiyancpa.com)
  2. 02 · Vest

    Exercise now, or wait?

Vesting gives you the right to buy. Timing that purchase against the rest of your income is where planning pays.

  3. 03 · Exercise

    Will I owe AMT?

Exercising incentive stock options can trigger the Alternative Minimum Tax before you sell a single share.

  4. 04 · Sell

    Ordinary income or capital gain?

How long you hold after exercise changes how the gain is taxed. Selling a week early can cost real money.

10 planning rules for stock options (article on bhuiyancpa.com)
  5. 05 · File

    Do my forms agree?

Your W-2, Form 3921 and broker 1099-B all have to line up on the return, or the same income can be taxed twice.
